The History Department participates fully in the University Honors College, including offering its majors the possibility of earning an Honors Degree. Each semester the department offers a number of classes in Honors format, including Western Civilization and United States History as well as various upper-level courses.  Based upon availability, full-time matriculated undergraduate University of Delaware students who are not in the Honors College must have completed at least 12 credits at the University and have a UD cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher to be eligible to enroll in Honors courses. Priority seating in Honors courses is always given to eligible Honors College students. Strong students are encouraged to enroll in Honors sections, which are characterized by small size, close student-faculty contact, and an emphasis on discussion and writing.

The Honors Degree in History requires a minimum of (30) credit hours in History courses including at least 18 Honors credits, distributed as follows:

  1. 12 Honors credits, at least 6 of which will be at the 300 level or above.
  2. 6 Honors credits in the senior year for the completion of an Honors thesis based on independent research. The research and thesis are approved by the student’s project advisor and the Departmental Honors Committee. The student makes an oral defense of the completed thesis. This defense is administered jointly by the Department and the Honors College.

To receive an Honors Degree in History a student also fulfills the general requirements of the Honors Bachelor Degree, including maintenance of a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or better. Please visit the Honors College website for more information.
